Chestnut is the name given to the trees that make up the genus Castanea from the family of beech (Fagaceae) and the edible seeds of these trees.
It is claimed that the word chestnut comes from Kastania, a city in the Thessaly region in Ancient Greece.
They are deciduous forest trees, sometimes in the form of shrubs. The shell is cracked. There are pseudo-end buds with buds emerging from the leaf axil.
The buds are covered with 2 overlapping scales. The leaves appear spirally arranged but bent in two rows. Secondary veins run parallel to each other. The leaves can be thick, sometimes hard, lanceolate, toothed and awn-like.
